Saturday 9: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (1971)
1) The lyrics tell us Paul believes it's going to rain. How's the weather where you are today? 77-80 partly sunny
2) Paul sings that he is sorry because he hasn't "done a bloody thing all day." What do you hope to accomplish this weekend?
Work on a prayer devotional on praying for your husband, Bible reading, enjoying the backyard. Maybe going out to get food.
3) He also references butter pie, which is made primarily with potatoes (with onions and, of course, butter). That dish is not popular on this side of the Atlantic. Last time you had potatoes, how were they prepared (baked, mashed, hash browned, french fried ...)? potatoes that are cut up and added to ground turkey to make turkey tacos.
4) Linda McCartney is credited as co-writer and performer on this recording. Paul and Linda were partners in real life, too; married 29 years, they raised four children together. They often said they tried never to spend more than a few hours apart. Do you enjoy a lot of togetherness, or do you value your personal time? Has your experience with Covid19 and quarantine changed how you feel about this? We have been married 45 years and we are retired. We value our personal space and our time together. I like to do my crafts and journaling, he likes to watch his tv programs. We cook and eat together. We enjoy time in the yard. During the week we have two of the grands and we
both take care of them. We watch certain tv programs together. We have been watching church online together. I am a more social person than he is. Prior to Covid, I would go with my friends 1-2 times a week. He has no problem with me going with my friends.
5) Paul and Linda came from very different backgrounds. His family was lower middle class, lived in Liverpool's public housing and received government aid. She grew up in affluent Scarsdale, the daughter of a wealthy theatrical attorney. Do you think it's more important for a couple to share a common background, or to share common interests? I think they are both important but I think you can be blinded by love and not see those things while dating. Life happens and things change. Learning to adapt is important.
6) Paul is known for his work ethic. At age 78, he's still making music and performing live. What's your favorite Paul McCartney song?Michelle
7) In 1971, when this song was a hit, Bobby Fischer was the world's most famous and highest-rated chess player. Do you play chess? No
8) England's Princess Anne turned 21 in 1971. The occasion was commemorated by a formal portrait, taken by celebrated fashion photographer Norman Parkinson. Who took the most recent photo of you? I did, I took a selfie of me and the grands in the spa.
9) Random question: Do you find it more satisfying to work with your hands, or your head? Depends on what I am doing, but both are needed.

Thankful Thursday
It's easy to be negative about things and I myself have been guilty of that. In the beginning of the year I asked the Lord what my word of the year should be. I thought 2020 would be a fresh start. But one morning while I was still in bed thanking God for a new morning, the word peace came to me. Throughout the week, the word appeared in various ways. I went to Michael's after Christmas and found a wooden sign saying peace. I also knew I was going to be doing an intense bible study for the year. The Lord gave me this verse.
Abundant peace belong to those who love Your instruction;
nothing makes them stumble. Psalm 119:165.
Little did I know how much that word spoke to me.
Today I am thankful for His peace.
Thankful that my kids are all doing well.
Thankful for a husband that cooks.
Thankful for my church and they way they have encouraged us.
Thankful for the leaders that have tried to keep the people safe.
Thankful for those that wear mask in public because they care about others.
Thankful for getting my Medicare card so quickly.
Thankful for having enough food to eat.
Thankful for focusing on my blessings.
Thankful that we provide a safe place for our grandkids.
Thankful the I can Bible journal with my grands
Thankful for the easing pain of losing my parents. My mom passed 10 years ago today.
Thankful for the Word of God
Thankful for my relationship with Jesus Christ!

Wednesday Hodgepodge
1. The US of A celebrated Memorial Day this past Monday. Does your family have any military ties? If so, tell us about them.I wrote about this at the May 23rd post.
2. Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, mac and cheese, macaroni salad...your favorite BBQ side? How many of these do you make from scratch vs. buying from the deli? None were made by scratch this year.
3. I enjoyed asking this question back when the Hodgepodge was a regular thing...Lake Superior State University posts a list each year of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. The 2020 list includes-quid pro quo, artisanal, curated, influencer, literally, I mean, living my best life, mouthful (word used by foodies to describe texture of food in their mouth), chirp (basically an insult, you can read more on the website), jelly (short for jealous), totes (short for totally), vibe, and OK Boomer (internet response from millenial to older generation).Of the words/phrases listed which would you most like to see 'banned'? quid pro quo
4. I'm sure next year's list will be filled with words springing out of this weird season we're all in currently. What word or phrase associated with the Corona would you be happy to hear less often? Corona Virus. I like Covid 19 better!
5. The month of May wraps up in just a few days. Bid her adieu in ten words or less. This will be a May I will never forget!
6. Insert your own random thought here.

Saturday 9 Battle Hymn of the Republic
Saturday 9: Battle Hymn of the Republic (1963)
Unfamiliar with Judy Garland's rendition of this week's tune? You can listen here
Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.
1) On May 30, 1868, President Grant presided over the Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery. Have you ever visited Arlington Cemetery? No I have not.
2) On Memorial Day, it is customary to fly the flag at half-staff until noon and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset. Will you be flying the flag at your home this weekend?Yes will up today.
3) Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, because flowers and ribbons were left on graves of soldiers. Do you find solace in visiting cemeteries?Yes I like to go to the cemetery where most of my relatives are. I was there for Mother's Day. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents are buried at Fairhaven Memorial Cemetery.
4) The lyrics to this week's song were written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861. Her inspiration was a White House visit with Abraham Lincoln. In 2020, under normal circumstances, public tours of the White House are available but you must request your ticket in advance from your Member of Congress (House or Senate). When you travel, do you plan your trip weeks before you go? Or do you decide how your days will unfold once you reach your destination? We always plan if it is longer than a couple of days.
5) Judy Garland performed this week's song before a live audience as a tribute to President Kennedy, who had been assassinated just weeks before. She knew Kennedy personally and considered this a farewell to a friend. While the performance was difficult for her -- at one point she flubs the lyrics -- she believed it was important, and could perhaps help the country heal. Tell us about a song that reminds you of someone you loved who is no longer with us.When my mom died and we siblings were discussing her service, I remembered my mom telling me the song she wanted at her funeral. It is called You Will Never Walk Alone. I remembered it because we learned it in 7th grade choir and my mom had gone to our performance. When my dad was dying he asked for I Can Only Imagine and Amazing Grace. So when I here those songs, I think of them. There is a Spanish song called Sabor a Mi that reminds me of my parents. It was sung by Eddie Gorme. We learned how to slow dance with that song. It was played at all our weddings. I danced with my dad and my hubby with my mom. Frank Sinatra songs remind me of my dad. Carol King Tapestry album makes me think of my mom because she bought the album for me and I still have it. Certain hymns remind me of my grandma.
6) John F. Kennedy served in WWII and was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps medal and a Purple Heart. His brother Joe also served and was awarded the Navy Cross, but he received his citation posthumously, having died during a flying mission over East Suffolk, England. Here at Saturday 9, we consider everyone who serves a hero and want to hear about the veterans and active military members in your life.My grandfather tried to enlist during WW2 but they did not take him because he had 5 young kids at home. They told him they needed men to supervise women at the Long Beach Harbor since so many men had to leave. He did that in the evening after working his regular job. His two sons were veterans of the Korean War. My dad served 6 years in the Naval Reserve and his sister was in the Navy and stationed at the Presido in San Fransisco. Her son my cousin served in the Navy as a Corpsman and is now a Physicians assistant. My grandmas two brothers served in World War 2. My husbands grandfather was at the Battle of Normandy and survived.
My Aunt Rosie and my dad Samuel
7) Memorial Day is considered the beginning of the summer season. Will you be enjoying warm weather this weekend?Yes in my backyard having a BBQ with family. The grands will be in the spa. It will be 89 that day.
8) Berries are especially popular in summer. Which is your favorite: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries?blackberries and boysenberries from Knotts Berry Farm I also tried Hukkleberries while at Yosemite.
9) If you could attend a Memorial Day picnic with any fictional character, which would you choose? All the people at the Twelve Oaks BBQ in the beginning of Gone With The Wind. I have read the book 7 times and I use to have a poster in my bedroom

Wednesday Hodgepodge
1. In a single sentence tell us something about your 40's. Started my website/blog.
2 Life begins at forty. Agree or disagree? Tell us why. And if not at forty, when? Yes it did, Having fun with my church friends, my relationship with my mom healed, fun on the computer and took my first flight, and went to Hawaii!
3. Share a favorite book, song, or quote with a number featured in it somewhere. My favorite book is the Bible Matthew 18:21-22 "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times !"
4. A picture's worth a thousand words, a stitch in time saves nine, back to square one, catch-22, on cloud nine, my two cents...pick a number phrase and tell us how it applies to your life currently. I need to appreciate the little things because they can be big things, like the hug from my grandchildren, the flowers my husband picked for me or the meal he prepared. Soaking in the spa, or just feeling the breeze on my face. The mental pictures stay on my mind.
5. Last time you drove more than 40 miles from home? More than 400 miles from home? Where were you going? Was it before or after this current season of social distancing? Hubby and I took a belated 45th anniversary trip to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite last October. We drove (467.1 mi) via US-395. If you drive straight through, it takes 7 hours 48 minutes, but it took us 12 hours because of all our stops. That was on our way up. We took a different route on the way back. So around a 1000 miles! 6. Insert your own random thought here.

Tuesday 4, Trains, Planes & Boats
1. Do you enjoy riding on trains, planes or boats? Got a tale to tell us?
I like all three. When I was 12, my parents along with my 2 siblings and my grandparents took a train to Colorado from California. My grandfather did not want to fly and I did not like the idea either back then. It was such a fun experience. It was winter of 1968 and there was a lot of snow everywhere. I remember one evening we slowed down and mom and I were walking and we decided to look out the window. We saw a couple of deer peering our way. I liked the dining car and the observation deck. I liked walking down the isles while going from car to car. I remember my little brother wearing an outfit that included cowboy boots and a space jump suit. They gave him a train engineer hat and he was so happy. It was a great experience! I am a person that likes movement, so I don't get motion sickness.
When my husband and I took a cruise to Alaska, we stopped at Skagway. We took a tour by bus to a replica gold mining camp. The bus then went up to Canada. We got on a train and had our passports checked. Then we went back down and it was a wonderful experience! I have been on 3 cruises and want to go again. I was very reluctant to fly until I was 40. I really enjoyed my first flight to Las Vegas and I was also sitting facing the opposite way. I remember saying"This is better than Star Tours!" People laughed because they new I was first time flyer. So glad I did. I have been to Hawaii 4 times. We flew to New Jersey and took the Lincoln tunnel to Manhattan. After a few days we boarded a cruise ship and went up the New England Coast to Canada. In the summer of 2018 I flew to San Jose to meet my cousin who was staying in Walnut Creek. We took the Bart train to San Francisco and it went under the San Fransisco Bay! So I enjoy all three ways!
2. The Orient Express is super luxurious with 5 star accommodations including real bedrooms, cocktail bars, etc. It stops along a route that includes, London, Paris, Berlin, Bucharest, Venice, Paris, Prague and Istanbul. Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express is set on the train. You can choose your itinerary from the lists their site offers. Of the places shown here, which cities interest you the most and why? If I had a chance to do this, I would do it all! There is so much rich history. If I could go to the Holy Land by way of Istanbul, I would chose that.
3. Do you think you would enjoy a cruise? Where would you go?As I mentioned, I have been on three cruises. The first one was a 3 day Baja cruise and it was a lot of fun but it went too fast! I really enjoyed the Alaska Cruise I went on with my husband and church friends in 2006. I saw so many great things including the Northern Lights. in 2008, my dad asked my sister and I to join him and my mom on a New England Cruise. Dad had booked a Mediterranean cruise, but had to cancel because of mom's Alzheimers. He did not want to lose his deposit so he changed it to a New England cruise. I was so excited to see New York and the cruise was fun too. I was able to sail by the Statue of Liberty several times. I got up real early as we came back to New York harbor so I could see the Statue of Liberty. Hubby and I want to take the Mexican Rivera Maya cruise next. I would like to take a 10 day cruise that goes to the Yucatan. We looked into a Disney cruise but they are very expensive!
4. Given the time and the choice and money being no object will you travel to Europe via plane or luxury liner? Luxury liner for sure!

Sunday Stealing
1. Where did your name come from. It is a question that I never thought to ask my parents, but it was popular in the 1950's.
Susan is derived from the Greek word meaning lotus flower. And according to Hebrew roots,
it is derived from the words meaning “to be joyful”. In Persian, Susan is the name given to lily flower. ...
French: Female Lily. Variant of Hebrew Susannah.
2. Where were you born? So California, grew up in Orange County, about 20 miles from Disneyland.
3. What was your house like, growing up? 3 bedroom one story in the city.We lived in 3 houses that were one story with 2 baths. They added a living room and 2 bedrooms on a second level. My had taking drafting in his younger days. He helped neighbors and family members add rooms to their houses. Once my parents added the upstairs rooms, they took a bedroom downstairs and made it into a library. We were avid readers.
4. What was your childhood bedroom like? I was a tomboy and always on the move.I shared a room with my sister. We had twin beds with matching bedspreads. Our room was always stylish because my mom loved to decorate. She also did inspections and she was a perfectionist. I remember we had a little vanity and it was taken over by our record player.
5. Did you travel as a child? Where? We did take annual vacations and every Labor day we went to family church camp. I remember going to Yosemite one summer and it was great. We also took a 2 day trip by train to Colorado. We also drove there. The best trips were to Disneyland!
6. Write about your grandparents. I have so many memories about my grandparents. (Paternal) I remember my grandma Louisa making tortillas. She even gave us a little rolling pin and some dough to make our own. She had a cellar were she kept her canned fruits and veggies. She and my grandpa had a garden and grandpa had several chili pepper plants. Grandma rented out 3 small rooms in the back of her property. She would make food and send it with my grandpa and he would sell it to his friends. I had to interview my grandma for a school paper and she was a smart business women. When my husband and I were buying our first home, she lent us money. She set up an account at the bank and we paid her back with inerest. She said this way she could help out her other grandkids. She died in 1999. My grandpa Susano died in 1987 at age 83.
(Maternal)My grandma Chona love to be in her garden and tend to her birds. My grandpa build her 3 aviaries. I don't remember cooking as much. I do remember my grandpa making pancakes and stir fries. To this day I think of him when I smell peppers roasting. He worked for the railroads for 10 years and he learned to cook Chinese food. So we all loved to eat it. He taught himself to read and write in Spanish and English and knew the Bible inside out. He ran his own landscape business and had many clients on the rich side of town. Beach Day & Saturday 9
We finally had a family outing at the beach. It wasn't very busy and we only needed mask when we hit the bathrooms. This is Newport Beach, home of the Dory Fishermen and not to far from Huntington Beach- Surfing USA.
The Air Force Thunderbirds flew over hospitals in California today as it headed over Hoag Hospital. They were in San Diego earlier.
We did use face mask when we went to the bathroom and later when we got food.
1) In this song, Lady Gaga sings about the Arizona sky and California gold. Have you visited many of our western states? I am from California. I have been to Neveda, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Arizona.

3) Her real name is Stefani Germanotta. She took her stage name from the Queen song, Radio Gaga. Do you have a favorite Queen song? We are the Champions
4) Her dad is Joe Germanotta, president of GuestWifi, a company that enables hotels and restaurants to offer high-speed wifi to their customers. Do you consider yourself tech savvy? I know what I need to know. I learned to build webpages using html.
5) Early in her career, Lady Gaga performed songs for a children's audio book called The Portal in the Park. Tell us about the last book you finished -- did you listen to an audiobook, or read a download to an electronic device or a bound book with pages? I haven’t read a book since last fall. It Is Not Suppose To Be This Way by Lysa Terkeurst. I have been reading out of several Bibles for various studies I am doing. I use to read more, but now I craft/Bible journal. I want to read the Left Behind Series again.
6) She prefers dogs to cats and tea to coffee. Do you agree with her? I prefer dogs. I can’t drink coffee anymore so I drink tea. There is a tea I like called Roastaroma by Celestial Seasons. It taste a bit like coffee so I have that some mornings.

The movie's star, Julie Andrews, graciously came onstage to thank Gaga for her showstopping performance. Whom did you most recently thank? My son and his wife for inviting us to the beach Friday.

1. What kind of setting do you like in a book as in nation, country, city, beach, resort, village and why? If there is no preference, how about a type of character? I use to be an avid reader. I enjoy historical fiction, and especially that of a biblical nature. My favorite series is The Left Behind Series that chronicles the events of the world after the Rapture. I enjoy a light mystery, because it challenges me to think. I like books that have been made into movies like Gone With The Wind and Little Women. I don't read much except for my Bible and books for bible studies I am involved with.
2. Can you tell us about a favorite character in a book you've enjoyed or a program you watch? I like Tom Sellecks character in Blue Blood. A sensible man that is wise, truthful and even tempered. He is a man that shows great character.
3. Why are you interested in the TV programs or movies you watch or books you read ? That is, what attracts you to them. I do like to watch a lot of tv programs. I like medical shows like Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med, The Resident, The Good Doctor and New Amsterdam. I like when the shows do cross over. Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Each has a focus on the Essential workers and how they are all needed in the city. I like to see 911 and the Rookie. Hubby and I like to watch Blue Bloods and we were sad to see the end of Hawaii Five 0. Hubby and I like to see Survivor and Dances with the Stars.
I spend a lot of time with my bible journaling/devotions/crafting. Right now I am only reading my Bible and just finished Judges. This will be my 4th time reading through the Bible.
4. Do you get upset if the routine of your day is upset or can you go with the flow? I am retired and I take each day as it comes. We have the grands right now since there is no school. Sat.9 I'll Always Love My Mama
1) This week's featured artists, The Intruders, sing that they don't know how their mama made it through the week without ever getting a good night's sleep. How did you sleep last night? I slept well, but did not get enough sleep. My problem is not getting to bed early enough. Then something woke me up so I had less than 6 hours sleep.
2) The Intruders performed this song on Soul Train, a syndicated show that ran for more than 3 decades. What show do you try never to miss? There are lots of shows I like, mostly medical/fire/police. I watched Soul Train for several years. We had neighborhood friends that came over and we would dance. Somewhere I have a picture of me dancing in a soul train line dance with kids from my youth group. We saw the Jacksons and Gladys Night and the Pips and so many other great Motown performers on Soul Train. When I got married in 1974, we had a Soul Train line that was super long. It was lots of fun. So many fun good memories! We also watched American Bandstand. I remember my aunt dancing with us around 1962. I love music!
3) On Soul Train, the Intruders wore solid black shirts beneath their brightly colored jackets. Black, white, khaki, navy and gray are considered neutral colors, because they go with everything. If we were to check your closet, which would we find you wear most often: black, white, khaki, navy or gray? I would say black.
4) Especially for Mother's Day: Access Hollywood named Carol Brady of The Brady Bunch TV's #1 mom. Who is your favorite TV mom? I liked Carol Brady too.
5) Mother Winters always gave Sam peppermint tea to calm her stomach. Do you have any tried-and-true home remedies to share? I use to drink a lot of peppermint tea for a stomach tea, but I had to stop because it aggravated my esophagus and I got really bad heartburn. I like to use honey for various things. I buy it at our local farmers market. I also use essential oils. I mix coconut oil and essential oils to make my own face cream and lotions. I have a lotion I use for sore muscles. I make my own sugar scrubs for the bath. I drink Chamomile tea with honey to sleep.
6) Sam's mother always tips 15% in restaurants. Sam has worked in food service and is more judgmental, tipping between 10% and 25%, depending on the quality of the service. What's your tipping policy? Are you more like Sam or her mother? How do you handle tips for carry out or delivery during this Covid-19 crisis? When we use to each out we would tip between 15 and 20% depending on the place and the service. We have only had one food delivery and we gave him $5.00
7) When the tip of her shoelace becomes frayed, Sam's mother snips off the end and then paints the tip with clear nail polish. Good as new! Sam thinks that's crazy because you can just buy new laces for less than $2. Are you more frugal like mother or spendthrift like daughter? I try to do things myself. Sometimes I am frugal and other times I am not. I color my own hair and forgo the nail salon so that I have money for my crafts. My crafts have kept me and the grands busy during this stay at home time.
8) Mother Winters loves how french vanilla smells and burns her Yankee Candles all year around. Do you use scented candles or air fresheners? I have allergies so I use essential oils. I put oil in a diffuser. I have different scents that I use at different times of the years. I have some I use when I am not feeling well. I use Young Living oils and they have special oils
9) Sam is celebrating Mother's Day with her mother's favorite, Hershey Bars. Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or chocolate with almonds?I like dark chocolate with almonds. But I had to give up chocolate when I got acid reflux. I do have a new page listed above called Fun Things, and there is a funny about chocolate.
