Welcome to Tuesday 4 started by Toni Taddeo and kept going in honor and memory of her.
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho It's Off to Work We Go #14
1. Describe the best job you ever had why was it good? (if it was awful, tell us about that instead) My first job was the best! I worked at a toy store called Toy City. It was for one summer and Christmas break. I think I was 14 or 15. I opened boxes of merchandise(mostly toys) and took out the inventory sheet that also had price stickers. I organized the shelves and helped customers find things. I learned to work the old fashion cash register. It really helped me with my math. At the end of the summer I bought a bike with an employee discount. I also wrapped gifts with red and white wrapping paper. During Christmas I searched for the layaways. I really liked going across the street to eat lunch at the Woolworth lunch counter. My mom was the head manager for the 9 Toy City stores in Orange County. She had her office on the 2nd level of the store. She dropped me off and picked me up. She taught me so many things!
2. How did you learn to do your job? I got a degree in Social Ecology from UC Irvine, class of 1977. I worked for the Department of Social Services for 1 year in 1976 and the cases made me so sad. I was already working part time part time for the US Postal Service. I got hired in 1975 after passing the 90 day probation. It was a busy 90 days. I was studying for finals and working 6 hours during the Christmas season. I had to learn the California scheme which meant I had to memorize about 1200 cities for Southern Ca. Zips 900-939. I was given a random 100 cards and had 5 minutes to sort the cards to the right slot. I liked working at Christmas and enjoyed seeing all the colorful cards. There would be about 35 clerks sorting mail. I also sorted business flats.
When I graduated from UCI I decided to stay at the Post Office because of the benefits and I enjoyed my part time hours. I worked 6-10 pm so I got extra pay for evening hours. It worked out great because I could be home during the day once the kids came. The downsize is that I got hurt more than once. I eventually got retrained in the Marketing Department. I eventually became the Vending Coordinator. Anyone buy stamps from a machine at the Post Office prior to 2009? That was my program. It ended in 2010 and I retired in 2011 after 36 years.
This is me in front of a Vending machine while on vacation in Skagway Alaska, 2006.
3. You are now in charge of your town's public relations committee.. Tell us why we need to move to your town.
I had to do this for an assignment in another group I was in. I don't think anyone would want to come here right now. My city is called Corona! You can find the link here: Hometown
4. It's lunch time! Build your perfect sandwich for us.. what's in it and on it and what's in our cups?
Chicken salad with mayo, chopped celery and sweet onion, sliced grapes and almonds or walnuts.
I like to drink infused water. I add frozen mango chunks to a glass and then add water. After I drink the water, I get a fork and eat the mango.
We have rain for the whole week!
