Friday's Fave 5 & Saturday 9

This has been a good week! 

I got to greet at church this past Sunday and it was good to talk to some of the ladies that are going to Israel with me. We are all hopeful. It was good to hear the Pator's son speak and he is working on his master's in theological degree. We like to hear him at the Riverside campus. After Audrina was through playing the keyboards for 3rd service we left and got lunch. I took her home and we ate lunch. Then I went shopping at Kohls. I found some shoes I like, but they were big. I bought them with my sales and coupons. Then I went home and ordered the size smaller. The sales guy said to bring both in and I would get the same sales price. I also ordered another pair. I got them all on Friday. Now I will return what does not fit. I hope to take them to Israel, but I will also wear now. I don't spend a lot on clothes, but I have got a few things to wear now and on the trip. I don't buy anything unless it is on sale.

I slept in on Monday hubby and I loaded up the car with more things to give away. It gets easier to do and I know it makes hubby happy! 

Tuesday I met several friends for lunch. We had a nice time catching up while our groups are on summer break. I sat next to one of the girls that is going to Israel and we were talking about needing to get a special visa to go to Israel. We both have Kaiser Insurance and we have phone appointments with a person that will go over international travel.  After lunch I was able to get several errands done close by. Hubby was thankful I brought him back some soup. 

The younger grands came over Wednesday with their dogs. We got pizza for dinner and they had fruit and popcorn for snacks. I made them breakfast Thursday late morning. Then their friend's mom picked them up to go swimming. The dogs were sad, but they liked it when hubby and I went out to the backyard with them for awhile. Thankfully the temperature dropped a little. Minnie was happy to see everyone!

Thankful to get my errands over before it gets hot. Supposed to get 105 this weekend! I got Minnie''s medicine and she gets refills until November and then she has to see the vet. I bought some groceries today and noticed some more prices going up. I put one thing back because it was not a food item. Thankful that I can make wise choices!

Saturday 9: Coconut (1971)

1) This song is about a woman who complains of a belly ache. How's your tummy this morning? Good!

2) She responds to this malady by calling the doctor. What if you chose to address the problem yourself? Are there currently any OTC digestive aids in your medicine chest? Pepto Bismal is my go too if my tummy hurts and feels off.

3) Coconut was once a popular ice cream flavor, but no more. It's not on the list of top sellers at Baskin Robbins or Cold Stone. When you last had ice cream, what flavor was it? Pineapple coconut when we were in Las Vegas at the Venetian.

4) Coconut remains popular in baking. It's easy to find recipes for coconut pie, coconut cheesecake, coconut cookies ... you get the idea. Have you recently tried a new recipe? If yes, how did it turn out?

I like to make coconut body scrubs and I need to get some sugar. I mix coconut, sugar and essential oil. Adding lemon or lavender smells so good. Adding Peppermint makes the skin feel tingly.

5) This week's featured artist, Harry Nilsson, was a well known free spirit. He liked to party and had a reputation for not adhering to a schedule. Therefore it's a little surprising that one of his first jobs was in the conservative atmosphere of a small bank. Do you prefer a more structured workplace? When I was working at the Post office, it was very structured.

6) Harry met Micky Dolenz when The Monkees recorded his song, "Cuddly Toy" and they became fast and life-long friends. Can you think of someone you met and quickly "clicked" with? Yes, my friends Linda and Carole. Also my friend Cynthia. I don't see Cynthia often, but when we do meet up, we can just pick up like the old days. Linda and Carole are going to Israel with me.

7) In 1971, when this song was on the radio, detective shows were popular on TV. Mannix, Ironside and Cannon were all in the Top 20. Do you think you'd make a good private investigator? I don't know. I do like to do research. I do not like to be in harm's way. 

8) England's Princess Anne turned 21 in 1971, and the occasion was commemorated with an official portrait taken by fashion photographer Norman Parkinson. Who took the most recent photo of you? My granddaughter.

9) Random question: You can redecorate any one room in your home, money is no object. But only one room. Which room do you pick? The kitchen. I would paint the cabinets white and get new hardware, get a new rangehood, get a new stove and finally, new flooring which would extend to the whole house.

Friday's Fave 5 and Satruday 9

Thankful for a slower pace and getting rest. I don't always sleep well because of the issues with lower back and neck. When I do feel well, I tend to do too much and end up hurting. I am using a heating pad as I write this. If I feel better later, I will go shopping. Meanwhile, I am happy to be in AC while it is 100 outside and reading and working on my crafts and studies.

Thankful for the things I am learning as I prepare my lesson for next month's Bible study. I have been going over places Jesus visited. Last year I was going over names of Jesus and Beloved came up as Jesus was baptized. Now my focus was on the place he was baptized. I looked through several of my Bibles and took notes. I also checked Bible Hub online. Some Bible translations say that Jesus was baptized in Bethany, beyond the Jordan. But other translations say Bethabara. or house of crossing. This location is different from Bethany that was near Jerusalem, the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. What is interesting about Bethabara is this location is where Joshua led the people into the Promise land by crossing over.  It is also the place where Elijah stepped into the Jordan and was taken up to Heaven. The main thing is that it is a place of crossing over, or a new beginning, physically and spiritually.

Thankful that my grands are all doing well. My grandson Eddie is working two part-time jobs before he starts college in the fall. One job is at a local amusement park. The other is at Tilly's a popular clothing store and he gets discounts. He is still volunteering at the local hospital 4 hours a week. When he has time, he is putting together a shed for us. His sister is enjoying her summer and only had to go to 2 practices for sports medicine. That group goes to all the football games and provides care to the athletes. She tried to do this last year, but cheer took more practice time, and she could not do both. She gave up cheer. She decided to do what was more important for her during her last year. Most of her classes in her senior year are also transferrable to college. She has been getting lots of college invites and wants to go to school outside of California. My other granddaughter just came back from youth camp and had a great time. She is the one that is on the worship team, and also sings at her youth group. The 12-year-old grandson is enjoying doing nothing but playing games with his friends. 

I am thankful that I got a shorter layered haircut that is much cooler for the summer. Also much easier to color. Thankful for good insurance. I met with one ophthalmologist and will meet with another and decide who will do my cataract surgery. It won't happen until the fall, after my trip to Israel if we still go. I am still hopeful, but the ongoing war just makes it less likely.

Thankful that Minnie is still holding her own, though I do see when she is hurting because of her panting. It doesn't happen often, but we are keeping an eye on her. She still wants to eat all the time and we make sure she is getting enough water. There is no more blood in her poops and that is good and she is pretty regular with the help of the stool softeners. All depends on how quickly the mass grows. Meanwhile, she is getting lots of love and attention. Thanks to those of you who are leaving well wishes and prayers.

4) Peggy wrote this song for the 1953 remake of The Jazz Singer. She performs it in the movie, too. In the 1950s, female singer-songwriters were unusual, but not so today. Can you think of another woman who not only sings but writes her own material? Carole King.

5) Her co-star in the film was Danny Thomas. Today he is best remembered as a philanthropist and founder of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, but he was quite a star in his day. He appeared in nightclubs and movie musicals and, from 1954 to 1963, had his own sitcom. Do you know the show?

No, but I remember his daughter, Marlo Thomas.

6) When Peggy Lee was trying to break into show business, she supported herself as a short order cook. She was required to turn orders around quickly. Are you fast and efficient in the kitchen? For the most part.

7) Just when her career started to take off, Peggy had to take a break when she had her tonsils removed. Do you still have your tonsils? No, I had them removed when I was 5. I still remember the pain and the popsicles. 

8) In 1953, when this record was released, Matchbox Cars were introduced and they remain popular today. Did you ever play with Matchbox Cars? Yes, with my sons and grandsons. There are probably a few left on the ottoman.

9) Random question: You're walking past a filthy puddle. Floating on top you see a dead bug, a cigarette butt, and a $1 bill. Would you bend over and rescue the dollar? I might have at one time, but not now.

Fridays Fave 5 & Saturday 9

I am thankful that Minnie is holding steady. Hubby stayed home with her on Sunday, and I was able to go to church after missing it or two weeks. I was able to see my granddaughter sing the National Anthem I am thankful that I can watch service online when I can't be at church. but I do like to see my friends and family there. 

Thankful that the younger grads came down on Monday and on Monday night I had all 4 grands here. It is rare to get pictures with all of them now. The younger grads were supposed to be here through Thursday along with the grand dogs, Plans were changed because of Minnie and their other grandma picked them up on Tuesday. She was able to see Minnie and Minnie was happy to see her too Thankful that our grands have their grandparents to help out. Here are Coco and Daisy.

Thankful to do some shopping on Wednesday after Senior Fellowship. I found a pair of pants and a top I can wear them now and when I go to Israel in October. I was talking to my 3 friends that are going to Israel too. We all want to go know things are in God's hand. But since the US attacked Iran, things have gotten worse. The travel agency says tours are still happening and we will know more as we get closer to October. If is not safe to go. the travel agency will let the Pastor know. Will we be sad? Yes, but like I said, it is in God's hands. I will get my money back and maybe I will get new flooring. But for now, I am still hoping and praying. 

Thankful that we can have dreams and also be realistic when life happens.

Thankful for a better night's rest. I have been turning the tv off and reading before bed. Thankful that I have the AD series of books in my library. I read them back in the early 2000's there was a lot I had forgotten. The series is by Brock and Bodie Thoen. It follows the people that lived during the year of Jesus. It brings Bible people back to life like the bling man that Jesus heals. The character is named Peniel/Penuel which means face of God or to see the face of God or to turn toward the face of God. Many of the correct names of characters are used. Biblical references are also listed. Jacob is from Genesis 32 and wrestled with God and named the place Penuel. Jacob then is known as Israel, one of Biblical hierarchs and the son of Abraham It also gives the historical perspective during that time. The emphasis is on the people that were healed by Jesus. I love historical Christian fiction!

January 25, several shows on our cruise ship. I saw Cece Winans in concert February of 25 with my granddaughter. My granddaughter and I are going to a musical play on July 11.

Fridays Fave Five & Saturday 9

Every Friday I stop to list things I am thankful for from the week and link with Susanne

I am thankful that the medicine has helped our sweet Minnie. She is walking better now and has even started barking again. Now that the stool softener is working, she is not struggling as much to potty. I am sure the steroids have helped with pain. For those that have not read my last few blog post, she has a mass blacking her lower bowels. The specialist and regular vet both suspect she has cancer and that her time is limited. We are determined to make her as comfortable as possible. She is always hungry, probably from the steroids. We have to give her smaller amounts of food, but we feed her about 4 times a day instead of two. I can tell she has lost weight, but her past increased weight might be from the mass.

I am thankful to those of you have read my blog and shown your concern.

I am thankful that our life is slow right now so we can take care of our Minnie. My husband's family reunion was a success and all our kids and grands went. I stayed home with Minnie. He will stay home this weekend so I can go to church and maybe do some shopping.

Thankful that I can have time to work on my crafts and Bible study/journal. I did this spread in 2020 and want to do it again in my Faith workbook. 

Thankful for the beautiful weather we have been having. 70's and 80's is great but we are heading to the 90's next week. That is still okay. We do get several days of 100 and thankful for air conditioning!

Thankful for my family and that they are all believers. Thankful to be a part of the USA!

SATURDAY 9: God Bless America

1) Irving Berlin's lyrics celebrate our mountains, prairies, and oceans. Which of these geographical features is nearest your home? The beach is about 35 miles from me. The mountains are about 50 miles. The desert is about 50 miles in another direction.

2) Berlin donated his royalties from "God Bless America" to the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Were you ever a Scout? Yes, I was a Girl Scout. 

 

3) While this week's song has been recorded many times, we're concentrating on Connie Francis' 1959 version. It was never intended to be a hit, released as the B-side to her popular "Among My Souvenirs." But it took off when it was played at school rallies and patriotic events. Do you know all the lyrics to "God Bless America?" Could you sing along with Connie? Yes, I learned it in Elementary school. 

4) After she wrote her autobiography, Connie said she wanted Valerie Bertinelli to play her in the movie. Even though Valerie isn't known for her singing, Connie liked that they were both Italian-American and 5'5". If we made a movie of your life, who should play you ??? I am only 5 feet tall!

 

5) Connie had a passionate romance with Bobby Darin, and their relationship is included in the Broadway show about Bobby's life, Just In Time. While Connie expressed her support for the production, she never saw the show because hip problems made flying difficult. How about you? Are you dealing with any aches or pains today? Yes, I have disc issues in my neck, mid back and lower back. I use my heating pad a lot. I can't pick up anything more than 8 pounds. I take Motrin when I have to. I have a cavity that is bothering me and it will get fixed in a week.

 

6) The Fourth of July means we're in the middle of summer. Are you careful about applying sunscreen? Yes, I have too. I got skin cancer on my face last year. Sadly, most skin cancer from today is from sun exposure in the past.

7) More beer is purchased for the 4th of July than any other holiday. What beverage will be served with your July 4th meal? Ice water with fruit and a touch of Snapple diet peach tea.

 

8) Emergency rooms expect an increase over the July 4th holiday. The most common causes are sports injuries (like jammed wrists and wrenched knees) and the unwise use of home fireworks. Have you  been to the ER or Urgent Care during 2026? No, thank God! But my precious Minnie has a few times.

9) New York is home to Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest every year on the 4th. Will hot dogs be consumed in your household this weekend? Hubby made some last week, and I would prefer a hamburger for this weekend.

Friday's Fave Fives & Saturday 9

This week has been hard. As I mentioned in my previous post, our Minnie is sick, she has a mass in her colon that was diagnosed this past Tuesday. We have to give her medicines at specific times and take h er out frequently. I have had some anxious moments, and I have to pray for peace. I had the same feeling when my dad was dying, and I have to do what I can to cope. Minnie is getting a lot of attention because she needs a lot of attention. 

I am thankful for my husband who has the night shift. 

Also Minnie's love and trust as we care for her.

Thankful that family is visiting her because it makes Minnie happy.

Thankful for the meds that are helping her right now. I get those ready.

Thankful for this computer and so I can ask for prayers and keep my mind busy.

Thankful for music that ministers to me.

Saturday 9: Cadillac Ranch (1981)

1) In this song, Bruce Springsteen sings about taking his father and his aunt to see The Cadillac Ranch. Have you recently taken a road trip? If yes, where did you go? We have not taken one in a couple of years. Hubby and I took a trip to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite in 2019 and it was a long but fun trip. We have taken a few since then, but this was a favorite.

2) The Cadillac Ranch is real. It's an outdoor art installation in Amarillo, TX. Tell us about a statue, mural, or other piece of outdoor art in your community. Our city was known for its' races and the city has a street that goes in a circle and has the nickname as Crown Town.

3) Not only is Bruce singing about a real place, he mentions three real people. The first is "James Dean in his Mercury 49." That refers to the 1949 Mercury driven by James Dean in his first starring role, Rebel Without a Cause. Though he remains a legendary star, Dean made only three movies before his death at age 24. Have you seen any of his films? Yes, Rebel, East of Eden and Giant.

4) The second is "Junior Johnson runnin' through the woods of Caroline." Junior Johnson was a folk hero, famous as a NASCAR driver and notorious for running moonshine through North Carolina. He was the inspiration for "Midnite Moon," an animated old Ford in the 2017 Disney movie Cars 3. What Disney movie did you enjoy when you were growing up?Too many of them to mention. But I really enjoyed Fantasia because of the music and of Leopold Stokowski. I played Walz of the Flowers for one of my piano recitals. I also enjoyed, Dumbo.

5) The third man Bruce sings about is "Burt Reynolds and his black Trans Am." This is a reference to Burt's biggest hit, 1977's Smokey and the Bandit. Burt also had success as a restaurateur. He co-owned Burt and Jack's, a popular steakhouse at Port Everglades, right on the water. Tell us about a restaurant that offered both good food and a memorable view. In 2022, we went to Salinas for my husband's brother's 60th birthday. Salinas and the surrounding cities produce many veggies and fruits for the state and export it other states. We had some fresh picked artichokes that we had just seen on our way to Monterey Bay. This area was a theme of a Steinbeck book. The restaurant we at was just a block away from Cannery Row, a title to one of his books along with East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath

6) For decades, Cadillac was the gold standard of luxury. For example, an eatery referred to as "the Cadillac of restaurants" would be best or most prestigious. Think about your neighborhood. Tell us about a restaurant, hotel or business that is "the Cadillac" of your community. Miguel's overlooking a lake. We usually eat at their fast food chains. 

7) Since he's been singing about America and cars for decades, it should come as no surprise that Bruce Springsteen has a collection of classic American cars. For the cover of his autobiography he chose a photo of himself leaning on his favorite, a 1960 Corvette convertible. Think about your favorite photo of yourself. What are you doing? Any photo with my grands is a favorite. This photo was taken June 26, 2022 at Mammoth. This waterfall could be seen across the lakes.

8) In 1981, when Bruce released this recording, Dolly Parton had a hit with "9 to 5." What's your favorite Dolly Parton song? Her duet with Zach Williams, There is Jesus. I am not a country music fan, but I like Dolly and this song really ministers to me,

9) Random question: When did you last DIY and fix something around your home or yard? I am not fixing anything right now. I am going through a decluttering process right now and making progress. I have a few plumerias that need to be planted.

Friday Faves 5 & Saturday 9

It is Saturday, after dinner and still light outside. I finally get some computer time.

Thankful for vets, doctors, nurses and medical workers. It has been a busy week with Minnie our doxie. She has been sick for over a week. She was not good last week, better yesterday and the vet was happy, but she is not good today. We might have to take her back to the vet. No insurance for her so I am thankful I have a dedicated credit card for her. I had my eye appointment and they dilated my eyes. My consult for cataract surgery is next week. Hubby had a nurses visit today too. Thankful for our insurance.

We watched church online this past Sunday. We had grands here Through Wednesday. Our oldest grand still stays here when he works. We are thankful we can see our grands often.

Thankful that my hair grows fast. I had a haircut and she cut too much off. I did want it shorter and define the layers, but I would not consider it a medium cut. It does feel much better-cooler.

Thankful that all my groups are on summer break. We can spend time with Minnie and get things done around the house. I have had time to put out my patriotic decor and watch shows that we like.

Thankful that I had a great dad. I sure miss him! He has been in Heaven since 2013. Thankful that he and my husband got along well.

Chosen for Father's Day.

1) In this song, a father shares the story of his daughter's life through first the boys, then the men, she brought home. The first is Rod, a little kid who wants to play in the backyard. Who were your playmates when you were young? Did you find it more fun to have them over to your home, or to go to theirs? As a preschooler and through first grade, most of my friends were boys. When I moved half way through first grade, I started making friends with girls from my class that lived in my neighborhood. So you know which one is me?

2) Then his daughter asked if Lee could carry her books on the walk to/from school. During your junior high years, how did you travel to school (bus, bicycle, car pool, shoe leather)?We walked. It was only about 10 blocks away.

 

3) Throughout this song, the father recalls that his daughter alternately called him "Daddy," "Dad," "Popsie," "Pop" and "Father." How did/do you address your father? Daddy as a little child, Dad as high schooler on. Then daddy as he neared the end of his life.

 

4) The song ends with the daughter asking her father to babysit. When did you last look after someone else's child? I watched my grands this past week.

 

5) This record was a Top 10 hit in the US and it made the Top 20 in Canada.  Much of its success was attributed to Mike Douglas' TV popularity. From 1965 to 1981, he hosted a daytime talk show. Do you watch much daytime TV? I watch a few soaps. A talk show once in a while.

 

6) Mike Douglas was a father himself. He had three daughters, including twins.  Are there twins in your family? No

7) Retail chains like O'Reilly Auto Parts, Auto Zone and Jiffy Lube are all promoting gift cards  and car-related gifts for Father's Day. If you got a gift card from one of those stores, how would you upgrade your ride? New car mats and phone holder.

 

8) Dick's Sporting Goods also enjoys a spike in gift card sales around Father's Day. Have you more recently given or received a gift card? I gave gift cards to a few graduates.

9) In days gone by, ties were the #1 Father's Day gift. But as today's workplace has become more casual, fragrance has taken over the top spot. Dove Men+Care offers  gift sets with shampoo/conditioner, body wash and antiperspirant. Think about your shower routine. Are your shampoo, body wash and antiperspirant all the same brand or the same scent? No, they are not. But they are either essential oils or fragrance free.

Fridays Fave 5 & Saturday 9

I am thankful for my family! I love how everyone came together to give Eddie a wonderful Graduation party! I am thankful that my boys like to cook. I let them play in the kitchen when they were young and they watched their dad and grandpa cool, along with the women. I am glad my daughter was able to make all the decorations look so nice. I did the same for years with church events and she helped me then and I could help where I could. Thankful to my daughter in laws too!

I am glad I did not have a busy week this week. I really needed the rest.  As tired as I was in Sunday, I still made it to church and Audrina was singing Then I went home and had leftovers. During the week I was able to hem Eddie's church that he wore to Disneyland on Tuesday. I was able finally sleep in. All our group are on summer break, and I can continue with my declutter project and crafting.

Thankful that the grands are enjoying their summer break. Jazzy gets to stay home with her rabbit and read as much as she wants. She is also looking at all the college information she is getting in the mail.

She wants to go to school outside of California. She just completed a few dual admission courses. She did that, cheered, and was a part of Sprots health. She is pretty quiet and I found out she was the head of her ASL club. I did not know that she could take that class-hand signing as an alternative to a foreign language. She will be more than ready for college. Eddie is working part time at a local amusement park and still volunteering at the local hospital. Thankful that all my grands are doing well!

Thankful for a good vet. Minnie has been having lots of stomach issues, and we have had to make several trips to the vet. They are really good with her going over everything and then checking in with us with text messages and phone call. I sure wish we had pet insurance, but you have to start it when they are babies. Thankful for my Care Credit card, just for her expenses.

Speaking of insurance. I am thankful for dental insurance. I delayed my last appointment and that was a mistake! I have gum disease and it was doing well at my last visit, but not so much this time. So after my free checkup today, the x-rays showed one cavity, and I need a deep gum cleaning and some other things. So, I will pay $400 instead of $3000! Thankful that my back is feeling better! The exercises are really helping. Hopefully I can get back to the gym next week!

Yes, I have several Mickey and Minnies. I have some Winnie dogs too. Some were my moms.

4) He sings about lightening. Astraphobia is the fear of thunderstorms. 

Have you ever suffered from astraphobia? No, because we do not get them very often.

5) This song is about falling in love when he wasn't looking for it. Has this ever happened to you? Yes, I didn't plan on falling in love with my husband when I was so young. I planned on going to college first. I finished college before our 93rd anniversary. Going on 52 years this August.

6) This week's artists, The Counting Crows, got their start in San Francisco. A famous quote, often attributed to Mark Twain, says, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." 

How has the summer weather been where you are? Mid 80's to mid 90's. No humidity, slight breeze.

7) In 2004, when this song was popular, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. Have you checked Facebook today? Yes, I check it daily. I love the memories that pop up.

8) Also in 2004, we lost President Ronald Reagan. Before entering politics, he had a decades-long career in Hollywood and appeared in 53 films. Have you ever seen a Ronald Reagan movie? I think I have seen a couple, but long ago. He became president when I was taking my firstborn home from the hospital, around 45 years ago!

9) Random question: Describe your favorite pajamas. I have several pair of soft short sleeve and shorts sets that I wear all year long. I do have warm pajamas I wear before bed and in the morning during the cold months, but I get too warm at night, so I wear the short ones to bed. If I had to choose one, it would be the one with dogs on it.

On Saturday, our granddaughter sent us a video from Huntington Beach because her family was at the Weiner fest. Our Minnie would not like it at all. She has social anxiety and hates water!

2. On Sunday, Hubby and I greeted, and our granddaughter sang on the worship team. It was nice to see so many getting baptized. Hubby and I went out for a quick lunch. Then I had to go back for a meeting for the people going to Israel. We will be taking shuttle vans from our church to the airport in Los Angeles that is around an hour away. We stopped at Aldi's to get fruit for our married group.

3. On Monday, Eddie went to his grad practice and picked up his tickets for the family. I went to my doctor appointment. I told her all that was happening with me, good and bad days. I told her I was doing my exercises and eating well. I told her about going to Israel and she gave me the number to call for our of country travel. They will let me know information about health and traveling. She put in for me to get all my labs done. I like my doctor and she is good at responding to my email messages too. Afterwards we had lunch at The Hat and then went to my son's new apartment. It is so nice and closer to his new store. Thankful for a good doctor and calendars that keep us on track!

4. Tuesday was graduation day and Eddie went to breakfast with his girlfriend, then came home and I helped him get flowers ready for his girlfriend. My daughter drove us, but parking was crazy busy. Another school was getting out as his school was trying to get there early to get good seats. While we were in line, Eddie's dad joined us. He lives in another state. He gave Eddie a lei made with $100 dollars worth of bills. Renee has a custom-made sash to wear and made him a money crown. The ceremony started right at 6:30 and ended at 8:00. Luckily Eddie went down the aisle closest to us.

We went out to dinner after at BJ's and they were so busy! We got home close to midnight, but it was worth it to celebrate. Thankful to see how happy the family was for Eddie!

Our married group met on Wednesday and we were so tired and we did not want to miss since it is our last meeting until the end of August. It was nice. There was lots of food and we started out by singing some older songs and then we had communion. Thankful for our friends!

Thankful that there is no cost for labs. So, after fasting 12 hours, I went in for my blood test. All my test came back normal except my cholesterol. My AIC test was in the top of the normal! My liver was normal too.  I got a call from the nurse saying my doctor wanted to know if would be willing to try cholesterol medicine again? I agreed to a lower dose. I will go today and pick it up. I also went to the bank to pay the balance of my Israel test. Thankful that I had the money for this trip.

Today will be busy preparing for Eddie's party that is Saturday.

Saturday 9: For You (1963)

1) In this song, Rick Nelson tells us he'd give his girl the stars from sky or a string of pearls. Have you more recently given or received a gift? What was it? I gave my grandson a Graduate Mickey with a Disney button with his name on it.

2) By the time this record was released, Rick was already a show business veteran. He had been a regular on his family's sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, since it began airing on radio when he was just 8. Most of us weren't child performers but many of us had chores around the house. When you were young, did your parents give you an allowance? I do remember getting an allowance as a teen and we would buy 45's. 

3) The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet moved to TV, where fans saw Rick grow into a teen who drove a 1932 Roadster. The car really belonged to Tony La Masa, who collected classic cars and rented them out to TV and movie producers. Have you ever earned or raised money with your hobby? Yes, I have sold crafts that I made for money. One year my cousin and I had booths at a hospital Christmas boutique. We each made around $400! Another time I made air freshener angels and sold them to my friends at work. My friend Coreen and I have been in a few Christmas boutiques. 

4) Paul McCartney has called Rick Nelson an "underrated singer who could really carry a song" and said Rick was one of his influences. Who do you believe you have influenced, professionally or personally?

I hope I have influenced my kids and grandkids. They are the most important to me. My women in my Bible journaling group always say how much I have encouraged their love of Bible journaling along with the teaching I give them.

5)  This week's song was already an oldie by the time Rick performed it. "For You" was recorded the first time by Casa Loma Orchestra in 1933. In those days, most records were 78 rpm discs, thick and usually only able to hold 3 to 5 minutes of sound per side. Most record companies stopped producing them in the 1950s. Have you ever seen a "78?" Yes, my parents had some. But they had more albums. They loved music and had a nice stereo system.

 

6) The lyrics to "For You" were written by Al Dubin. After Al left college he supported himself as a singing waiter. That's really two jobs in one. Which would you do better at: singer or server? Neither!

 

7) The music was written by Joe Burke, whose last hit song was "Rambling Rose," recorded in 1948 by Perry Como. Have you ever heard of Perry Como? Yes, my dad really liked him and had some of his music.
