Friday's Fave 5 and Satruday 9

Thankful for a slower pace and getting rest. I don't always sleep well because of the issues with lower back and neck. When I do feel well, I tend to do too much and end up hurting. I am using a heating pad as I write this. If I feel better later, I will go shopping. Meanwhile, I am happy to be in AC while it is 100 outside and reading and working on my crafts and studies.

Thankful for the things I am learning as I prepare my lesson for next month's Bible study. I have been going over places Jesus visited. Last year I was going over names of Jesus and Beloved came up as Jesus was baptized. Now my focus was on the place he was baptized. I looked through several of my Bibles and took notes. I also checked Bible Hub online. Some Bible translations say that Jesus was baptized in Bethany, beyond the Jordan. But other translations say Bethabara. or house of crossing. This location is different from Bethany that was near Jerusalem, the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. What is interesting about Bethabara is this location is where Joshua led the people into the Promise land by crossing over.  It is also the place where Elijah stepped into the Jordan and was taken up to Heaven. The main thing is that it is a place of crossing over, or a new beginning, physically and spiritually.

Thankful that my grands are all doing well. My grandson Eddie is working two part-time jobs before he starts college in the fall. One job is at a local amusement park. The other is at Tilly's a popular clothing store and he gets discounts. He is still volunteering at the local hospital 4 hours a week. When he has time, he is putting together a shed for us. His sister is enjoying her summer and only had to go to 2 practices for sports medicine. That group goes to all the football games and provides care to the athletes. She tried to do this last year, but cheer took more practice time, and she could not do both. She gave up cheer. She decided to do what was more important for her during her last year. Most of her classes in her senior year are also transferrable to college. She has been getting lots of college invites and wants to go to school outside of California. My other granddaughter just came back from youth camp and had a great time. She is the one that is on the worship team, and also sings at her youth group. The 12-year-old grandson is enjoying doing nothing but playing games with his friends. 

I am thankful that I got a shorter layered haircut that is much cooler for the summer. Also much easier to color. Thankful for good insurance. I met with one ophthalmologist and will meet with another and decide who will do my cataract surgery. It won't happen until the fall, after my trip to Israel if we still go. I am still hopeful, but the ongoing war just makes it less likely.

Thankful that Minnie is still holding her own, though I do see when she is hurting because of her panting. It doesn't happen often, but we are keeping an eye on her. She still wants to eat all the time and we make sure she is getting enough water. There is no more blood in her poops and that is good and she is pretty regular with the help of the stool softeners. All depends on how quickly the mass grows. Meanwhile, she is getting lots of love and attention. Thanks to those of you who are leaving well wishes and prayers.

4) Peggy wrote this song for the 1953 remake of The Jazz Singer. She performs it in the movie, too. In the 1950s, female singer-songwriters were unusual, but not so today. Can you think of another woman who not only sings but writes her own material? Carole King.

5) Her co-star in the film was Danny Thomas. Today he is best remembered as a philanthropist and founder of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, but he was quite a star in his day. He appeared in nightclubs and movie musicals and, from 1954 to 1963, had his own sitcom. Do you know the show?

No, but I remember his daughter, Marlo Thomas.

6) When Peggy Lee was trying to break into show business, she supported herself as a short order cook. She was required to turn orders around quickly. Are you fast and efficient in the kitchen? For the most part.

7) Just when her career started to take off, Peggy had to take a break when she had her tonsils removed. Do you still have your tonsils? No, I had them removed when I was 5. I still remember the pain and the popsicles. 

8) In 1953, when this record was released, Matchbox Cars were introduced and they remain popular today. Did you ever play with Matchbox Cars? Yes, with my sons and grandsons. There are probably a few left on the ottoman.

9) Random question: You're walking past a filthy puddle. Floating on top you see a dead bug, a cigarette butt, and a $1 bill. Would you bend over and rescue the dollar? I might have at one time, but not now.

Friday's Fave Fives & Saturday 9

This week has been hard. As I mentioned in my previous post, our Minnie is sick, she has a mass in her colon that was diagnosed this past Tuesday. We have to give her medicines at specific times and take h er out frequently. I have had some anxious moments, and I have to pray for peace. I had the same feeling when my dad was dying, and I have to do what I can to cope. Minnie is getting a lot of attention because she needs a lot of attention. 

I am thankful for my husband who has the night shift. 

Also Minnie's love and trust as we care for her.

Thankful that family is visiting her because it makes Minnie happy.

Thankful for the meds that are helping her right now. I get those ready.

Thankful for this computer and so I can ask for prayers and keep my mind busy.

Thankful for music that ministers to me.

Saturday 9: Cadillac Ranch (1981)

1) In this song, Bruce Springsteen sings about taking his father and his aunt to see The Cadillac Ranch. Have you recently taken a road trip? If yes, where did you go? We have not taken one in a couple of years. Hubby and I took a trip to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite in 2019 and it was a long but fun trip. We have taken a few since then, but this was a favorite.

2) The Cadillac Ranch is real. It's an outdoor art installation in Amarillo, TX. Tell us about a statue, mural, or other piece of outdoor art in your community. Our city was known for its' races and the city has a street that goes in a circle and has the nickname as Crown Town.

3) Not only is Bruce singing about a real place, he mentions three real people. The first is "James Dean in his Mercury 49." That refers to the 1949 Mercury driven by James Dean in his first starring role, Rebel Without a Cause. Though he remains a legendary star, Dean made only three movies before his death at age 24. Have you seen any of his films? Yes, Rebel, East of Eden and Giant.

4) The second is "Junior Johnson runnin' through the woods of Caroline." Junior Johnson was a folk hero, famous as a NASCAR driver and notorious for running moonshine through North Carolina. He was the inspiration for "Midnite Moon," an animated old Ford in the 2017 Disney movie Cars 3. What Disney movie did you enjoy when you were growing up?Too many of them to mention. But I really enjoyed Fantasia because of the music and of Leopold Stokowski. I played Walz of the Flowers for one of my piano recitals. I also enjoyed, Dumbo.

5) The third man Bruce sings about is "Burt Reynolds and his black Trans Am." This is a reference to Burt's biggest hit, 1977's Smokey and the Bandit. Burt also had success as a restaurateur. He co-owned Burt and Jack's, a popular steakhouse at Port Everglades, right on the water. Tell us about a restaurant that offered both good food and a memorable view. In 2022, we went to Salinas for my husband's brother's 60th birthday. Salinas and the surrounding cities produce many veggies and fruits for the state and export it other states. We had some fresh picked artichokes that we had just seen on our way to Monterey Bay. This area was a theme of a Steinbeck book. The restaurant we at was just a block away from Cannery Row, a title to one of his books along with East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath

6) For decades, Cadillac was the gold standard of luxury. For example, an eatery referred to as "the Cadillac of restaurants" would be best or most prestigious. Think about your neighborhood. Tell us about a restaurant, hotel or business that is "the Cadillac" of your community. Miguel's overlooking a lake. We usually eat at their fast food chains. 

7) Since he's been singing about America and cars for decades, it should come as no surprise that Bruce Springsteen has a collection of classic American cars. For the cover of his autobiography he chose a photo of himself leaning on his favorite, a 1960 Corvette convertible. Think about your favorite photo of yourself. What are you doing? Any photo with my grands is a favorite. This photo was taken June 26, 2022 at Mammoth. This waterfall could be seen across the lakes.

8) In 1981, when Bruce released this recording, Dolly Parton had a hit with "9 to 5." What's your favorite Dolly Parton song? Her duet with Zach Williams, There is Jesus. I am not a country music fan, but I like Dolly and this song really ministers to me,

9) Random question: When did you last DIY and fix something around your home or yard? I am not fixing anything right now. I am going through a decluttering process right now and making progress. I have a few plumerias that need to be planted.

Friday Faves 5 & Saturday 9

It is Saturday, after dinner and still light outside. I finally get some computer time.

Thankful for vets, doctors, nurses and medical workers. It has been a busy week with Minnie our doxie. She has been sick for over a week. She was not good last week, better yesterday and the vet was happy, but she is not good today. We might have to take her back to the vet. No insurance for her so I am thankful I have a dedicated credit card for her. I had my eye appointment and they dilated my eyes. My consult for cataract surgery is next week. Hubby had a nurses visit today too. Thankful for our insurance.

We watched church online this past Sunday. We had grands here Through Wednesday. Our oldest grand still stays here when he works. We are thankful we can see our grands often.

Thankful that my hair grows fast. I had a haircut and she cut too much off. I did want it shorter and define the layers, but I would not consider it a medium cut. It does feel much better-cooler.

Thankful that all my groups are on summer break. We can spend time with Minnie and get things done around the house. I have had time to put out my patriotic decor and watch shows that we like.

Thankful that I had a great dad. I sure miss him! He has been in Heaven since 2013. Thankful that he and my husband got along well.

Chosen for Father's Day.

Who were your playmates when you were young? Did you find it more fun to have them over to your home, or to go to theirs? As a preschooler and through first grade, most of my friends were boys. When I moved half way through first grade, I started making friends with girls from my class that lived in my neighborhood. So you know which one is me?

5) This record was a Top 10 hit in the US and it made the Top 20 in Canada.  Much of its success was attributed to Mike Douglas' TV popularity. From 1965 to 1981, he hosted a daytime talk show. Do you watch much daytime TV? I watch a few soaps. A talk show once in a while.

7) Retail chains like O'Reilly Auto Parts, Auto Zone and Jiffy Lube are all promoting gift cards  and car-related gifts for Father's Day. If you got a gift card from one of those stores, how would you upgrade your ride? New car mats and phone holder.

 

8) Dick's Sporting Goods also enjoys a spike in gift card sales around Father's Day. Have you more recently given or received a gift card? I gave gift cards to a few graduates.

9) In days gone by, ties were the #1 Father's Day gift. But as today's workplace has become more casual, fragrance has taken over the top spot. Dove Men+Care offers  gift sets with shampoo/conditioner, body wash and antiperspirant. Think about your shower routine. Are your shampoo, body wash and antiperspirant all the same brand or the same scent? No, they are not. But they are either essential oils or fragrance free.

Fridays Fave 5 & Saturday 9

I am thankful for my family! I love how everyone came together to give Eddie a wonderful Graduation party! I am thankful that my boys like to cook. I let them play in the kitchen when they were young and they watched their dad and grandpa cool, along with the women. I am glad my daughter was able to make all the decorations look so nice. I did the same for years with church events and she helped me then and I could help where I could. Thankful to my daughter in laws too!

I am glad I did not have a busy week this week. I really needed the rest.  As tired as I was in Sunday, I still made it to church and Audrina was singing Then I went home and had leftovers. During the week I was able to hem Eddie's church that he wore to Disneyland on Tuesday. I was able finally sleep in. All our group are on summer break, and I can continue with my declutter project and crafting.

Thankful that the grands are enjoying their summer break. Jazzy gets to stay home with her rabbit and read as much as she wants. She is also looking at all the college information she is getting in the mail.

She wants to go to school outside of California. She just completed a few dual admission courses. She did that, cheered, and was a part of Sprots health. She is pretty quiet and I found out she was the head of her ASL club. I did not know that she could take that class-hand signing as an alternative to a foreign language. She will be more than ready for college. Eddie is working part time at a local amusement park and still volunteering at the local hospital. Thankful that all my grands are doing well!

Thankful for a good vet. Minnie has been having lots of stomach issues, and we have had to make several trips to the vet. They are really good with her going over everything and then checking in with us with text messages and phone call. I sure wish we had pet insurance, but you have to start it when they are babies. Thankful for my Care Credit card, just for her expenses.

Speaking of insurance. I am thankful for dental insurance. I delayed my last appointment and that was a mistake! I have gum disease and it was doing well at my last visit, but not so much this time. So after my free checkup today, the x-rays showed one cavity, and I need a deep gum cleaning and some other things. So, I will pay $400 instead of $3000! Thankful that my back is feeling better! The exercises are really helping. Hopefully I can get back to the gym next week!

Yes, I have several Mickey and Minnies. I have some Winnie dogs too. Some were my moms.

4) He sings about lightening. Astraphobia is the fear of thunderstorms. 

Have you ever suffered from astraphobia? No, because we do not get them very often.

5) This song is about falling in love when he wasn't looking for it. Has this ever happened to you? Yes, I didn't plan on falling in love with my husband when I was so young. I planned on going to college first. I finished college before our 93rd anniversary. Going on 52 years this August.

6) This week's artists, The Counting Crows, got their start in San Francisco. A famous quote, often attributed to Mark Twain, says, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." 

How has the summer weather been where you are? Mid 80's to mid 90's. No humidity, slight breeze.

7) In 2004, when this song was popular, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. Have you checked Facebook today? Yes, I check it daily. I love the memories that pop up.

8) Also in 2004, we lost President Ronald Reagan. Before entering politics, he had a decades-long career in Hollywood and appeared in 53 films. Have you ever seen a Ronald Reagan movie? I think I have seen a couple, but long ago. He became president when I was taking my firstborn home from the hospital, around 45 years ago!

9) Random question: Describe your favorite pajamas. I have several pair of soft short sleeve and shorts sets that I wear all year long. I do have warm pajamas I wear before bed and in the morning during the cold months, but I get too warm at night, so I wear the short ones to bed. If I had to choose one, it would be the one with dogs on it.

Friday's Faves Five & Saturday 9

It is almost midnight so I am going to get my Friday's Faves 5.

1. Thankful that hubby and I could go my hometown and leave flowers at our mom's graves. We also stopped at a stationery store in the same city. Then we went back to our city and met my son and grandkids for Chinese food at our favorite place. 

2. Thankful to be able to go to first service to hear my granddaughter sing. They passed out really nice keychains to all the mothers'. I need to take a picture of it. Then we headed to my daughter's church and we enjoyed the worship there too! Hubby wanted to take me out, but I just wanted to go home and eat my Chinese food leftovers and be with Minnie our furbaby.

The grands got to spend the day with their moms, and I got to relax and watch tv with the hubs.

3. Thankful that I could sleep in on Monday. Monday was Women's study on Exodus and that teaching will be on Monday at a home where we will enjoy the final lesson and dinner.

4 My daughter took me to the movies on Tuesday, and we saw the Michael Jackson movie and it was pretty good. Took me back to my youth young adult hood.  Later my hubby and I met our other son and his wife at Olive Garden to celebrate Mother's Day. They gave us some gifts from their vacation in Japan. I am blessed that each of my kids took time to celebrate and make Mother's Day special.

5. Thankful to have our younger grands here for the day and they are spending the night so that their parents can celebrate their 21st anniversary at the beach.  It has been a busy day and now they are in bed. I am blessed to have my family close bye.

Saturday 9: Fun, Fun, Fun (1964)

1) This song is about a girl who borrows her father's Ford Thunderbird. When is the last time you drove someone else's car? I can't remember. Do the cars at Disneyland count? Last fall.

2) The teen in question is well known for ability to drive "like an ace." If we were to ask your high school classmates what they remember most about you, what do you think they'd say? My friends would remember me being in a lot of service clubs and GAA-Girls Athletic Association.

3) She told her father she needed the car to go to the library but used it instead to meet friends. Can you recall a time your parents caught you in a fib? No.

4) For this girl and her friends, fun centered on cars and fast food. What did you and your friends do for fun during your teen years? The thing I remember the most was being active in my church youth group. We did a lot of fun things year round. I remember football games and going to Bob's Big Boy for hot fudge Sundays.  ushering the school plays and special events in the auditorium. I liked going to the beach in the summer. I liked buying 45's when I could and mostly listening to music. I loved to watch American Bandstand and Soul Train. Here we are dancing at a summer youth group party. I am in the back right and I made my outfit.  I am dancing with the Helmut, a foreign exchange student from Germany. Clean fun, no alcohol.

5) Legend has it songwriters Brian Wilson and Mike Love got the idea for this song from a Salt Lake City disc jockey. He told them he'd lent his T-bird to his daughter so she could go to class at the community college but discovered her deception when the car was ticketed in front of a fast food restaurant. Can you think of another song inspired by true events? 1967 White Rabbit, Go Ask Alice a song by Jefferson Airplane, about teens and the drug culture. They made a movie about it. I never did drugs. The movie opened my eyes to the struggles of teens and drugs. I could list lots of songs, but this post would be too long. This was one of the songs and movies discussed in my Psychological literature class in high school. 

6) As in the song, the disc jockey punished his daughter by taking her driving privileges away. Were your parents strict when you were growing up? My mom was stricter than my dad. They were strict about a few things. I was a pretty good kid, and for the most part, I followed the rules.

7) This song was recorded on January 1, 1964. The Beach Boys had to work on the holiday because they were under pressure to meet a February release date. How did you spend New Year's Day 2026? We stayed home, watched the Rose Parade, had left overs and just relaxed. I probably crafted.

 

8) 1964 was a great year for Capitol Records. They had chart-topping hits by the Beach Boys, Barbra Streisand and, most spectacularly, The Beatles. The Capitol Records Building in Los Angeles is considered iconic and it's a stop on tourist bus tours. Have you ever been to Southern California? If yes, what did you do?

I have lived in So CA all my life. I have done many things. The beach is less than an hour

away. I have been to most of the amusement parks like Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Marineland. I have been to San Diego many times and visited all the fun things there. I am 1-2 hours for local mountains and an hour to Palm Springs and Los Angeles. A couple of years ago, I got to see the Hollywood stars walk of fame, I have been up the coast and the 395 along the high mountain ranges.  I have been to several museums, including the Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan library. That is just So California. Lots of places in Central and Northen CA.

 

9) Random question: What's the last compliment you received? Wednesday at marriage group,

Fridays Fave 5 & Saturday 9

I am looking back this week to some of special blessings. I am lining with 

1. Thankful that I was able to go to breakfast and the movies with some of my friends. We saw The Devil Wears Prada and we enjoyed it. Later I went to our Women's Bible study and it went well.

2. Thankful that I have a hot tub because I sure needed it this week. Also, thankful that I am still going to physical therapy. I see my primary on the first and I will go over the back issues I am dealing with. So again, I am thankful for good health insurance.

3. Thankful that I still have my website. I must have over 200 pages with a lot of memories, holidays and more. I need to print the things I have written and put them in a album. I pay for my website and it will be gone after I am gone. 

4. Thankful for my married group. It is great being able to share the things we deal with and what we have gone through. It is special to share our faith and the importance of being there for our families. We met for our regular meeting on Wednesday, and we met for lunch today. Thankful that a friend in my married group will be able to help me with my luggage.

5. Thankful that I was able to return some graduation things I got at Hobby Lobby and then rebuy them at the 40% off sale. Thankful that I was able to make a big payment on my trip to Israel in the fall.  

Saturday 9: Like My Mother Does (2011)

1) In this song, Lauren Alaina tells us she knows she's beautiful and strong because she sees herself as her mother does. Who in your life consistently sees the best in you? My sister Terry.

 

2) She sings that her mother is her "rock." In this context, what do you think that means? My mom was very protective of us. I don't think I really appreciated her until I had kids of my own. I knew she was a strong woman and did a lot for everyone.  I am a lot like her and my dad.  

 

3) When Lauren performed this song in concert, she brought her mother Kristy up on stage and held her hand as she sang. Kristy said she was touched, but also embarrassed because her daughter was the entertainer, not her. Do you get shy when all eyes turn to you? Depends on who I am with. I felt that way when I first started working in the marketing department at work. I was clerk doing a higher-level job. I had to report to a lot of higher-level people. I was like my mom; I didn't show it. Once I had to give an explanation of the program I was working on for the Retail Specialist. She actually prayed for me before it began. I was in with the District Manager, Postmaster and several other areas for the district office. I knew my job and explained it well. I attribute this to both my parents.

 

4) Lauren began reading in pre-school and always read well above grade level. As a child, were you a big reader? Are you a big reader today? I had a hard time reading until 4th grade. Then I realized the enjoyment of books and the library. I became an avid reader like my parents. The computer changed that for many years. But I have gone back to daily reading, and I love Christian Historical fiction. I usually read at night when the house is quiet.

   

5) According to the National Restaurant Association, we like to eat out on Mother's Day, and brunch is especially popular. If you could have whatever you want for brunch, what would you order? Brunches are usually all you can eat, so I could have what I wanted. Depends on where I would go. We usually go to a Mexican restaurant and they have everything. From waffles to posole. Plans have not been made yet. We are going to Las Vegas in a few weeks and we will hit the buffets there.

6) Mother's Day is the third biggest card-sending holiday in the US, just after Christmas and Valentine's Day. Who received the last card you purchased? My daughter and grandson. They both had birthdays in April.

 

7) While flowers are the most popular Mother's Day gift, jewelry comes in second. Are you wearing any jewelry as you answer these questions? If yes, did you receive it as a gift or buy it yourself? I am wearing some bracelets I made. I am wearing an multi-faceted diamond ring my mom gave me years ago before she got Alzheimer's. I am wearing a cross that my husband bought me in Mexico while we were on a cruise.

 

8) According to the National Retail Federation, more and more of us are celebrating our mothers by taking her to a paint and sip event, a pottery class, or candle or soap making. Which of those four options do you think you'd enjoy the most? My mom passed in 2010 from Alzheimer's. We took her to a concert a year before she died. She loved music. If I had to choose, from the four, it would be the sip and paint.

9) While there's a spike in phone traffic on Mother's Day, these days it seems the trend is texting. On holidays, do you receive more calls or texts? texts.

Fridays Fave Five & Saturday 9

It is always nice to look back to see what I was thankful for the past week. Sorry that it is so long and 

I added a #6 which was the thing that meant the most to me.

1. Church was nice on Sunday and our granddaughter sang again. Hubby and I tried a new place to eat after church. I got to do some crafting while hubby and I watched a couple of shows we had recorded. Later I watched Call the Midwife, the Forsythe's and The Count of Montecristo, all on PBS.

2. I slept in a bit on Monday and I needed that sleep. I wasn't having as much pain in my arm, but my back was bothering me. The weather was cool and overcast so I asked hubby to open up the spa. I soaked for an hour and it really felt good! After, I watched a video on Right Now Media. I saw part 3 of the story of Exodus. My friend picked me up and we went to our women's Bible study which is on Exodus. After the Women's pastor gave us the highlights of the weeks study, I met with my group that was back to 9 which was good. As a facilitator, you always wonder what happens when the original number drops. But life happens and women can't come. We have two more sessions. When I came home I watched American Idol while I crafted. They sang songs from Taylor Swift and I didn't know any of the songs. I really enjoyed some of the other nights when they sang songs from Disney and their Faith night when Carrie Underwood sang How Great Thou Art.

3. I slept in on Tuesday morning and worked on my faith journaling. I went to Bible study and Pastor Jim finished Revelation. We had been in the verse-by-verse study for a year! There was a lot of cross references to prophetic verves from the old and new Testaments. 

4. I went to Physical Therapy on Wednesday, and I did my exercises and the PT had me lay on my belly so we could massage the pressure points on my back. I could tell him what hurt and though I still have numbness, I am also getting more muscle strength, but not a lot of muscle in the rear where I need it the most. I am not sure if he will put in for another referral to my doctor. I see her on June 1, When I got home, I had dinner and then I colored my hair. When I was done, hubby and I started Survivor, but did not finish it.

 5. Thursday was another Disneyland Day. We picked up our grands at 10am. We got on the Rise of the Resistance Ride in Star Wars Land. It was a 55-minute wait. We also went on Star Tours and my back bothered me a little after that. Then my granddaughter's friend and Nanny showed up and we went to get some beignets and then headed to Pirates of the Caribbean. Then we went to get on the Jungle Cruise but it was temporarily closed. The kids wanted Dole Whips, so we got those and then left to the California Adventure Park. It was a beautiful day, 75 and sunny. We got on the Incredicoaster and then the kids got inline for Soaring over California. We had lunch and then the kids went on the Little Mermaid. My son joined us and we went back to the Disney side and the kids went on Thunder Mountain. I went on the Mark Twain to give my back a rest.

My son and grandson were tired so we did some shopping and then my son took me home. It was a nice day, but I was a bit sore. Thank goodness for Motrin! A long shower helped me relax and sleep through the night. I guess 15,000 steps helped too! (picture found on the net.)

6. A few weeks ago, I mentioned I asked for prayer on a possible health issue. I got my answer today. I am okay! A few weeks ago, I went in for pain in my armpit, but the doctor felt a lump and referred me to Radiology. It was a long 5 week wait. My daily scripture verses were on faith. I had a few friends praying for me but I did not tell my kids. I was going to wait until after my grandson graduated. But what I was most concerned was my trip to Israel. I have to have my final payment in by June 7. If I was going to need a biopsy/treatment/surgery, I only had a few weeks to decided and pull out before making the final payments. I was also worried about my friend/roommate. If she could not get another roomie, she would have to pay $1000 more! I had the mammogram first and told the tech about Israel. She wanted to know why Israel and I told her I was going with my church. Then I went for my ultrasound and told her about my trip. Then she did my ultrasound and spent a long time with it. The had me get dressed while the radiologist looked at my results. When she came back she said the radiologist said everything looked okay and the tech said to have a nice trip to Israel. I said "Praise God!" and thank you to her. I walked out and started crying but I had my sunglasses on. What a relief! Thank You Lord!

 

Saturday 9: I'll Get By (As Long as I Have You) – 1944

1) "I'll Get By" was very popular song in the 1940s, and we're taking a look at the recording by Dick Haymes and Harry James because it got the most airplay. Can you think of another song that has been

recorded by more than one artist? A lot of Carole King songs that she wrote were sung by other artist

and she put some of them on her Tapestry album. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? You Make Me Fill Like a Natural Woman and You've Got a Friend.

2) In this week's song, vocalist Dick Haymes sings that he won't complain about the rain. Do you have any complaints about the weather this morning? No complaints, Sunny in the 70's.

3) Dick was briefly married to movie queen Rita Hayworth. Known as The Love Goddess and The Strawberry Blonde, Rita was famous for her magnificent mane. She dyed her dark brown hair red to get attention and it worked. Have you ever experimented with a different color? If yes, were you happy with the results? I put streaks in it once. But I have used the same colors for years. I was a dark brown. I use a light auburn brown hair color that I have used for years. My hair grows quickly and so do the grey hairs.

4) Dick was the lead vocalist of the Harry James orchestra. Like Dick, Harry had a movie star wife. Betty Grable was famous for her legs. Her bathing suit poster inspired hosiery manufacturers to single out her perfectly proportioned thighs, calves and ankles. Betty herself joked, "I'm a star for two reasons, and I'm standing on them." What do you think is your best (physical) trait? I would say my good skin. I always put sunblock and wore hats and still got skin cancer. The dermatologist said I had good skin. I rarely got acne. So most of you know I had to have the cancer removed and I have an inch scar that has healed well and will get lighter.

5) Betty's weren't the only legs that fascinated Harry. He was known for his stable of thoroughbred racehorses. Have you ever been to the races? No.

6) Teenaged Harry played trumpet with The Beaumont High School Royal Purple Band. Did you belong to groups or clubs while you were in high school? Yes, several. Girls League, Spinsters, Usherettes, Student Relations, Honor Society and Girls Athletics.

7) In addition to "I'll Get By," Judy Garland's "Trolley Song" topped the charts in 1944. When did you most recently take public transportation? The trams at Disneyland.

8) Also in 1944, Diana Ross was born. First with the Supremes, then as a solo artist, she has sold more than 100 millions records, making her one of America's most successful female singers. Who is your all-time favorite "girl singer?" Amy Grant and Carole King and I have scene them both in concert.

9) Random question – Last week we asked about the garage. Let's turn our attention to the glove compartment (aka glove box). What have you got in there? Car insurance things, receipts for the most recent tune ups. Envelope of receipts and eyeglass cleaner kit. There might be a few face mask.

Friday's Fave 5 & Saturday 9

It is Friday night and it has been a nice week. Our granddaughter sang at our satellite church and we went to hear her and the message. Afterwards we out to Red Lobster for lunch. Thankful that we can for to hear her and the young pastor who happens to be the son of the senior pastor at the main church.

We were supposed to go to Disneyland but moved it to Friday. I was glad, because then hubby and I got to see the men's hockey game and the closing ceremony for the Olympics.

Thankful for a day of rest on Monday. It was nice hearing the birds singing and working on my Bible journaling. It felt weird not watching the Olympics. The Volleyball teams will be playing about 30 minutes from us when it comes to Los Angeles. We might go see them. My grandson in currently playing volleyball for his high school.

On Tuesday our grandson got an award and we went to his school to see him. He is a senior and ASB vice president. He isn't able to do his volunteer work at the hospital right now because of it, but the hospital will let him come back when it is over. He is also working on the weekends. He doesn't like missing church, but he can only work on the weekends right now. He has received several acceptance letters from the 4 year state colleges he applied for. He is still waiting for a few more. He is an honor student and we hope he gets financial aid. I sure hope he smiles after he gets his braces off!

Thankful for another great meeting with our senior life group. Several couples were missing which gave more of our smaller group to speak. Also happy to watch Survivor Season 50!

Thankful for a fun day at Disneyland with my grands. Even though it was in the low 90's. we still had a fun time. We go to go on several rides and find the cool spots. We went to the animation academy and learned how to sketch Eeyore from scratch. Thankful that my husband could drop us off. Thankful that we had a fun time in spite of the heat. Thankful that my son could join us after his work and that we could get on a few rides, have dinner and see the Paint the Night Parade!

Saturday 9: Farewell, Amanda (1949)

5) "Farewell, Amanda" was composed by Noel Coward. Though best known as a playwright, he also wrote more than a thousand songs and was a director and an actor. His epitaph reads, "A talent to amuse." How would you like to be remembered? A woman who loved the Lord and her Bible and Bibe journaling. A woman who loved her family.

 

6) There's even a book of Noel Coward paintings. It was published after his death, in part because Coward considered himself only an amateur painter. When did you last pick up a paintbrush? I picked up a paintbrush at the beginning of February.
