Saturday 9: People (1964)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Barbra Streisand sings that pride can get in the way of happy relationships. Have you found that to be true? Yes, that can be the case in certain situations. I have grown in this area.

2) The photo on the record sleeve was taken on Chicago's Oak Street Beach, as Barbra watches the sun rise over Lake Michigan. Have you been to the beach yet this summer? Yes, I was there last Saturday.
It was 73 at the beach and 98 in my city.

3) Barbra performed "People" more than 1,350 times when she played Fanny Brice onstage in Funny Girl. She also did it in her Oscar-winning turn as Fanny in the film version. She performed it in her first TV special back in 1964 and in at least 510 concerts since. That's a lot of "People!" Can you think of another performer who has/had a song that is so identified with them you can't imagine seeing them in concert without hearing it? It's too Late Baby, Amy Grant.

4) Barbra got her first pet, a poodle named Sadie, as a gift from the Funny Girl behind-the-scenes crew when she was 23 years old and she's had dogs in her life ever since. Did you have pets when you were growing up? We had a mini doxie named Mandy Belle.

5) Barbra has always taken her Jewish faith seriously, beginning with her days at the Yeshiva of Brooklyn. 70 years later, her old school is still there. How about your grammar school? Does it still stand? Yes it does. Madison Elementary. I am with my4th grade teacher Miss Helm. More retro pictures on my previous post.

6) She tried marijuana a couple times but didn't like it and the only alcohol she drinks is the occasional beer with her Chinese food. Are you like Barbra and generally abstain? Or do you enjoy pot and/or alcohol? I tried MJ once in my early 20's, yuck! I will have a virgin drink if I want one which is rare.

7) Barbra's favorite lunch is a bowl of Campbell's condensed tomato soup. If we were to peek into your pantry, would we find any canned soup? Yes, I have tomato, chicken noodle, chicken rice and lentil.

8) In 1964, when this song was popular, hats were, too. The Sears Spring/Summer catalog devoted six pages to ladies' hats and two pages to men's. Are hats part of your wardrobe? Yes, I have a few. See above. I have some baseball caps, some of my mom's hats I wear, and knit hats for winter.

9) Random question: Which of your personality traits has gotten you in the most trouble? I am ADHD and talking to much can be a problem. But mostly when I am around people I am comfortable with.

Tuesday 4 and Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Were you an adventurous child at all? Very adventurous! Being ADHD probably contributed to it.
2. What were some of your favorite places to go when you were a child? Amusement parks, movies, restaurants, zoo? I live in So. California, and there has always been a lot to do. I was born the year that Disneyland opened, so that was the best place to go. Knott, San Diego Soo, Sea World, and Marineland.
Those were the big things. Spending time with my cousins at our grandparent's homes. Riding my bike to the park was fun. Playing with the neighborhood kids without any worries. Doing things with my church family. Going to the movies with the family and church was fun too.

3. What games did you play outdoors?  Hide and seek. Riding bikes and skate boards. Playing in club houses. indoors? All sorts of board games like Monopoly and the Game of Life. Playdough, pick up sticks, jacks, skip tape and Etch of Sketch.

4.  Where did you grow up and do you think it affected who you are today? I live about 30 miles from where I grew up. I am me, and lots of factors have made me who I am. My family, my Christian upbringing, my life experiences ad children.

1. What do you think has remained the same about you your whole life? Being friendly and creative. My love of Jesus. How has your perception of yourself changed over time? I learned to be myself and not someone I thought I had to be. I appreciate things more now. I look back at my upbringing and can see the good and bad as an adult and know God has always been a part of my life. My walk with the Lord has grown. I got together with my sisters and brother and spouses and see that though there were some rough times growing up, we all turned out okay, and our families are all doing well.

2. What was the first thing you learned how to cook? Do you prefer to cook or bake? I would rather cook. I was about 12 when I learned to cook. I learned a lot from my mom, because she worked and needed my help. I also took cooking at school and had "homework." The food that stands out is my mom's tacos. It may not have been the first thing, but it was the best thing. My mom showed me how to cook the ground beef. She had me peel potatoes and cube them. They were cooked separate from the meat until they were almost done, then added to the almost cooked meat along with onion. It was the frying part that took time. Putting the meat in the warm tortilla and frying it in hot oil makes it taste so good!

3. What are some of your current priorities in this season of life? Elaborate. My family is my priority after God. My faith and prayer life has grown even more. My health. Now that I am nearing 70, I am thinking more about the things I need to do to prepare for when I go to heaven. At the same time, I want to do what I can to be healthy and active for as long as I can.

4. How much time do you spend on your hair each day or, put another way, what's your hair care routine? Do you get it cut regularly or just whenever the mood strikes? Do you go to the same stylist every time? Do you tell your stylist everything? Any other beauty treatments you indulge in throughout the year? I am a wash and wear girl for the most part. I will spend time on it for church and special occasions. I color it myself when I can. I get a hair cut when I feel I need it.

5. What is the most awe-inspiring place you've visited? The Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska and the beautiful waterfalls on the road to Hana in Maui. Also, Hawaii with my grands in 2018.

A few other places too like Yosemite, Mammoth, Grand Canyon and Lake Tahoe.
Out in the ocean, looking out a plane and being amazed that God lets us defy gravity!

6. Insert your own random thought here. I went to the doctor a few weeks ago to find out about pain/numbness in my lower back and neck that radiates to my hands and feet. All my blood test are okay. My x-rays showed I have degenerative joint disease and disc narrowing. I have also lost a lot of muscle. The doctor referred me to physical therapy. I am glad they did not just push drugs on me!

Previous post has my prom picture, retro camper and great aunts.

11. Have you ever won something? Yes, the last thing was a bingo game poolside at our timeshare. About 15 years ago I won a complete baking set and I don't bake. But then I had grands and started the tradition of baking ginger bread and sugar cookies at Christmas. I still have a lot of those items and bring out for Christmas baking.

12. What did you last eat? Greek yogurt, fruit and nuts.

2. Thankful for Being able to help out at Vacation Bible School along with my grands. My granddaughter is leading worship.  They are both helping with crafts. It is a circus theme, and snacks
are what you would find at a carnival. Hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, corn dogs and pizza.

4. Thankful for another successful Bible journaling gathering. We don't meet again until August.

5. Thankful to have had nice weather this spring. We will not be in the 90's. Happy Summer!

Saturday 9: I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive (1952)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Hank Williams sings that his fishing pole is broke and the creek is full of sand. OK, so he can't spend his Saturday fishing. What are your Saturday plans? Going to the beach!

2) He regrets how shabby his shoes are. Do you shop for shoes online, or do you prefer going to the store and trying them on? Always in the store.

3) This was the last Hank Williams song to be released during his lifetime. Though he was only 29 when he died, he left an enduring mark on American music and is considered one of country music's greatest singer/songwriters. Who is your favorite country music performer? I am not a big fan of country music. I do like Carrie Underwood.

4) Elvis was a big fan and his favorite Hank Williams song was "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." What's your favorite Elvis song? In the Ghetto.

5) Johnny Cash was a big Hank Williams fan, too. He performed Hank's gospel song, "I Saw the Light" often in concert and during his guest starring role in a 1974 episode of Columbo. Did you watch Columbo, or do you stream it or catch it in reruns? No

6) Hank was a prolific songwriter, composing songs on his guitar and then printing the lyrics by hand on notepaper. He never learned to read music. Can you read music? Yes, I played the piano for many years. I also sang in the choir at church and we read off music sheets.

7) When he was a teen, Hank sang and played his guitar on the sidewalk in front of a local radio station, making a little money and hoping to be discovered. His plan worked and he was occasionally invited in to play with the radio station's house band. Were you a hard-working teen? I was at home. I did work one summer and Christmas when I was 14 and I felt like I did a good job. My mom was the head manager and she said to always keep busy.

8) Hank suffered from a congenital spinal condition and began self-medicating with alcohol during his teen years. He was warned against this early on by country superstar Ray Acuff, but Hank was unable to deal with the pain without liquor. Can you recall wise advice you wish you'd taken, but didn't? Probably more than once. Don't get married so young.

9) Random question: What's your favorite Mexican food? My home made hard shelled ground beef and potato tacos, my mom's recipe.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. It's National Splurge Day...what's something you might splurge on today? What have you splurged on recently? I spurge on healthy food. It used to be crafts, but food is more important!

2. Do you have a beach bag? What's in it? Yes, I have a few beach bags. One is from Hawaii, one is a canvas with a retro cover. I have a smaller waterproof bag that goes in it. I have my sunblock, a hat, bottled water, lip sun block.

Is a trip to the beach on your summer bucket list? Yes, we are going to the beach for a couple of days for our anniversary in August. We may go whale watching.

Do you have a summer bucket list? My Bible journaling group met Tuesday and I was busy prepping for that and the girls always like what I prepare for them. We will break in July and start back in August. Vacation Bible school is this week. I am helping with the crafts along with my grandson. My granddaughter is leading worship. Our married group is going to Balboa bay for a sunset cruise. My hope is to get lots of exercise in this summer.

3. What's a song that makes you think of a summer past? What comes to mind when you hear it? What memories does it stir up for you? I can think of a whole album, Tapestry from the summer of 1971. I went on a 6 week vacation with a friend to Mexico City. When I came back, my mom gave me the Tapestry album that I still have today. The song It's too Late was on the charts for week. I remember playing the album downstairs and we girls and mom would all be singing to it.

4. Sushi-yay or nay? Have you actually tried it? If you love it what's your go-to order? Yes, I have tried it. I like some of it, like the California roll. Fresh salmon is very cute and less fishy than tuna. We have the fresh salmon caught in Alaska and in a sushi dish while in Hawaii.

5. I own a ridiculous amount of crafts that I use for general crafting with my crafty group and for Bible journaling.

6. Insert your own random thought here. It's going to be another busy week since I am helping out with vacation Bible school(VBS)  My grandson is my helper and my granddaughter is leading worship for Kid's Convention.

Friday Fave Five & Saturday 9

Thanks to Susanne and Samantha for the memes, links on the left.

Happy Flag Day!!!

Thankful for being able to get together with my siblings for lunch, a walk and desert on Sunday!
Later hubby and I enjoyed watching The Chosen.

Thankful to be able to have lunch with friends to send off a friend as she moves to Arizona.
We had a great lunch and time of fellowship!

Thankful to have lunch with our son and his wife to celebrate hubby for Father's Day. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant supply place and found some helpful things.

Thankful to work on my Bible journaling group kits for next week. Friends are sending in pictures of their fathers. We also got to see The Chosen again. Each episode is great. The director of The Chosen is  the son of one of the authors of the Left Behind series that I just finished.

Thankful for the everyday things like food to eat, a comfy bed, a nice rain shower and this computer!

Thankful for a great dad who got along great with my husband, both great Father's! Picture taken at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Oahu Hawaii, June 2012.

Saturday 9: Wait Till You See Him (1967)

This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day. Hear it here.

1) This is Nancy Sinatra's celebration of her father, Frank. She singles out the sound of his laugh as something special.  Do you know anyone who has a great laugh?
I know several people. My cousin Joanie is one.

2) Frank Sinatra recorded this song himself a decade earlier. It was one of more then 1,400 recordings he made over his career. When you think of him, what song comes to mind?
I did it My Way and New York New York. Both remind me of my dad.

3) Nancy always called her famous father "Daddy," while her younger sister Tina referred to him as "Pop." How did/do you call your father? Dad, daddy when I was little and as he neared death.

4) Nancy went on to have two daughters of her own. The girls recall that their grandfather was loving and supportive, even when they went through a punk rock phase with spiky hair, lots of leather, and studs. Frank defended their extreme choices as a healthy means of self-expression.
Did you have arguments with your parents over your clothes or hair?
Yes, of course. skirt height. My mom always had me wear my hair short until 7th grade. Then I got to grow it out. I had curly hair and shorter hair saved her time since she had 3 girls, and 4 kids to get ready in the morning. I wore my hair long after that until I became a senior and was on the swim team. Short was better I grew it out and it really long. Then cut it a bit with my first baby and then again with the second. I think that was the last time I wore short hair. I just cut 2 inches off last week. If you're a parent yourself, have you always approved of your kids' fashion choices? No, did not like the saggy, baggy look.

5) Back when our own Crazy Sam was in high school, her father gave her driving lessons.
What grade would you give your driving today? I think I am still an A, maybe A-. I still remember
my dad taking me driving and to get my drivers license.

6) For family barbecues, Sam's dad dons his "Kiss the Chef" apron and mans the Weber.
What's the last thing you grilled? I don't grill. My husband and grandson do.

7) Because he takes his grilling so seriously, Sam once invested in a pair of forged steel
tongs for Father's Day. Does anyone on your gift list have a passion that makes them easy
to shop for? We just went to a store and my son got tongs. My husband and sons all light to cook, but restaurant food cards are what they love best!

8) Traditionally the most popular Father's Day gift have been ties, wallets and belts.
However experiences -- like tickets to a concert or a sporting event -- are gaining in
popularity. Which would you prefer to receive: something to own and hold or an experience
to remember? Probably the experience and then I usually get something to remember the experience. I got the cd and program booklet. 2016

9) Random question: Have you recently mistakenly called someone by the wrong name?
Yes, sometimes I go. I called my granddaughter Renee, her mom's name.

Happy Father's Day!
